Naquela que será uma das maiores demonstrações de sempre da especulação gritante que circunda o lançamento de uma determinada película, Jeff Wells, do Hollywood Elsewhere, publica comentários que tem ouvido. Dois ou três amigos que têm assistido às primeiras exibições de Funny People, de Judd Apatow, e que não cabem em si de contentes. O trailer deixou-nos estranhamente curiosos. Curiosos, por ser um Apatow. Estranhamente, por nos parecer que o filme do cineasta, não só abandona o registo cómico dominante de trabalhos anteriores, como abraça o lacrimejante recessivo. Em Março de 2008, o Rotten Tomatoes conversou com Apatow, e o argumentista e realizador falou dos seus cinco filmes preferidos. Entre eles, Tootsie e Terms of Endearment. Dois expoentes máximos da simbiose entre drama e comédia. Sobre o filme de James L. Brooks, Apatow disse.

“I can never get enough of Terms of Endearment. I find myself watching it over and over again. It does everything that I want a movie to do. I fall in love with the characters. I care about their journeys. It never does anything easy to make me like the characters. It doesn't sell out the characters for likeability. They all do things that are awful to each other. The relationships are very complicated. Yet, you root for all of them when you watch the movie”.

Ora, parte da premissa de Funny People passa pela doença terminal de George Simmons (Adam Sandler). Quer-nos parecer, acima de tudo, que Apatow poderá procurar com este título afastar-se do mero agrado das massas, e ganhar também o afecto dos círculos de críticos e Academia de Hollywood. Jeff Wells diz-nos que, quem já viu, coloca o filme na rota dos prémios.

“Possibly an award-level thing, a director friend said this morning, although he was just passing along the chatter. It's more in the realm of Sandler for Best Actor and Apatow's script for Best Original Screenplay, he speculated, than a Best Picture shot...but you never know.

So I called a non-vested guy who's seen it, and here's what he said: "Really funny, a really sweet movie, a lot of veracity...really a brilliant film. Everybody's game goes up a lot. It's a James L. Brooks-level thing and a great role for Adam. It's a perfect blend of everything Sandler has done in a serious vein. The film could be a bit of a marketing problem because it's about show business but it's so real.. It's about a famous guy, a comedian, having to deal with the fact hat he has no life and nobody to turn to. But he gets better [through a relationship with a younger comic]...it's basically a love letter to having a family”.
